When Teresa Roe joined F&C CPAs in November 1989, floppy disks had their own filing cabinets, fax machines were impressive, and WordPerfect was changing how office documents came together. Teresa still thinks WordPerfect is superior, by the way.

Nearly 37 years later, she has seen the firm change in ways no one could have imagined back then. She has the memories, the photos, and the sense of humor to take us along for the ride.

As Teresa suggested, it’s time to jump into the time machine.

Finding Her Way Home

The story starts in Missouri in 1989, when Teresa welcomed her first son and found herself wanting to be closer to family and friends in Oklahoma. She and her husband made a plan: they would move home, she would return to work, and he would pursue his college degree.

Teresa had worked in Oklahoma City before, but with a young family, she hoped to find something closer to Shawnee. Her search led her to F&C
that November.

“Divine providence, I believe,”
  she says.

Back In the Day

Ask Teresa about those early days, and she remembers the little things that felt like big advances: laser printers, fax machines, floppy disks, and the shift from typewriters to WordPerfect.

The receptionist routed calls, and anyone away from a desk might hear a page asking them to “please dial the operator.”

The office looked different, too. Jackets and ties were standard for men, dresses and skirt suits for women, and yes, there were even battery-powered smokeless ashtrays on desks.

Teresa’s verdict on that last detail?

Some of her favorite snapshots capture the fun around the work, from office celebrations, firm picnics, and hairstyles that could only belong in the ’90s.

The Work Behind
the Finished Report

Teresa’s work has evolved right along with the technology.

Today, as Document Quality Manager, she works with Jenée Parsons
and Lori Macy in the Document Quality Department, part of
Audit & Assurance.

The team helps turn working documents into clear, professional materials
for clients. They format Word and Excel files, proofread language and punctuation, check numbers and formulas, and support the audit team from engagement letters through final reports.

It is detailed work, and Teresa enjoys being part of it.

“We want our team and our firm to look good in print!”
  she says.

Then she adds, with typical Teresa humor, that looking good on screen matters, too.

The People Along the Way

The people in Teresa’s photos tell another part of the story.

When she started, Terry Toole and Nate Atchison were the audit partners. Over the years, she has also worked with Tim Barnes, Dan Bledsoe, and Chance Allison, along with coworkers across the firm.

When asked what has kept her at F&C, Teresa talks about the people she has learned from, relied on, and leaned on. The work matters to her, but so do the relationships built in the middle of ordinary workdays and shared celebrations.

As she puts it, the people have been one of the mainstays of her time here.

Making Room for Life

Being close to her sons’ schools and able to take time off for their events meant a great deal to Teresa when they were growing up. These days, she appreciates that flexibility for time with her granddaughter, too.

Some of those family moments became F&C memories. There were picnics, community walks, baseball outings, Christmas parades, and plenty of Trick or Treat celebrations.

In one photo, Teresa is holding her granddaughter at F&C Trick or Treat in 2017. It is a sweet reminder of how much life can happen while you build a career.

Back to the Present

Bring the time machine back to 2026, and Teresa can see just how much has changed.

The tools, the office, and the way work gets done may look different, but she says the important things have stayed:
good people, good values, and quality work.

She is quick to say the road has not always been smooth.

Still, she describes her time at F&C as an incredible journey, and she is not ready to retire just yet.

So what comes next? Teresa has one more question for us:

"What will the sequel  to my story be . . . ?"
