What Does an Accountant Even Do?

What does an accountant even do?

I have been a staff accountant in the tax department for nearly a year and this is a question that I still get asked by family and friends. What does an accountant do? Why did you choose this as a career? How did you know you wanted to be an accountant? These are all good questions.

The truth is I am still figuring a lot of the answers out for myself.  So, if you are interested in a job in this field listen up, because I am going to give you some perspective as a newbie.

Possibilities and Preferences...Choose Wisely

First, you may be asking the most common question, “What does an accountant do?” Or you may even be in the position of “What do I do with my accounting degree?”

That is exactly where I was in life a year ago.  I was about to graduate with my BBA in Accounting and was looking for my next step. I had no idea what to do next or what kind of job I would be doing. I was filling out applications I had found on LinkedIn, asking professors about possible jobs, and attending career fairs. After all that work, I ended up with a few interviews all in different areas of accounting!

At that point, it was about choosing which one was the right fit.

How Did You Know You Wanted to be an Accountant?

This is another question I have been asked multiple times. My answer every time is “I honestly didn’t know that I wanted to be an accountant.”

My family and friends knew before I did but finding the job you are meant to do in the world is something you must find for yourself.  I didn’t come to this realization until halfway through obtaining my college diploma. To be completely honest with you, I didn’t really choose to become an accountant. I already was one. I know that sounds dramatic and maybe even cliché, but it is the truth. Nothing else felt as natural. I am not saying that being an accountant is easy by any means, but I knew after a few classes that this was the type of business that I was meant to be working in.

So, why did I choose this as a career you ask? Well, I chose it because it incorporates a lot of things that I enjoy. I like that it challenges me. I like that I learn something (or multiple) new things every day. I like that I get to work alone, but that there is a team aspect also. It just was a great balance for me.

Accounting is not for everyone.  There are challenges daily, a huge learning curve, and extremely long hours at times.  But I have had the opportunity to learn things I never could have dreamed to know, met some amazing people, and started the career of a lifetime. I would not change a single thing about this past year, and I cannot wait to see what lies ahead. So, if you are a new graduate or just someone curious about the accounting field, I hope you might have gotten some clarity to your questions from this article.

Do not be afraid to try new things, you may just stumble upon exactly what you were created to do.
